Work-related fatal injuries to workers (employees and the self-employed) in Great Britain by detailed industry

  • In the year 2022/23, there were 135 fatal injuries to workers across all industries, with 91 employees and 44 self-employed individuals affected. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 0.41, with a higher rate among the self-employed at 0.93.
  • The Agriculture, forestry and fishing industry had a significantly high rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers at 7.87, with 21 fatal injuries in total. The rate was even higher among the self-employed in this industry at 8.98.
  • The Crop and animal production, hunting and related service activities reported 20 fatal injuries, with a rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers in this industry was 8.53.
  • The Fishing and aquaculture industry reported 1 fatal injury with a rate of 11.03 per 100,000 workers.
  • In the Mining and quarrying industry, there were 2 fatal injuries to workers, all of whom were employees. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 1.94, and for employees, it was 2.11.
  • In the Other mining and quarrying division, there was 1 fatal injury to a worker who was an employee. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers and employees was 5.19 and 5.27 respectively.
  • In the Mining support service activities division, there was 1 fatal injury to a worker who was an employee. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers and employees was 1.35 and 1.49 respectively.
  • The Manufacturing industry reported 15 fatal injuries to workers, all of whom were employees. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 0.57, and for employees, it was 0.61.
  • The Manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials reported 2 fatal injuries to workers, all of whom were employees. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 3.16, and for employees, it was 3.83.
  • The Manufacture of paper and paper products and the Printing and reproduction of recorded media each reported 1 fatal injury to an employee, with rates of fatal injury per 100,000 workers at 2.16 and 1.33 respectively.
  • The Manufacture of chemicals and chemical products reported 1 fatal injury to an employee, with a rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers at 1.08.
  • The Manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products reported 2 fatal injuries to workers, all of whom were employees. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 2.64.
  • The Manufacture of basic metals reported 3 fatal injuries to workers, all of whom were employees. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 3.68.
  • The Manufacture of fabricated metal products, except machinery and equipment and the Manufacture of computer, electronic and optical products each reported 1 fatal injury to an employee, with rates of fatal injury per 100,000 workers at 0.99 and 0.62 respectively.
  • The Manufacture of machinery and equipment n.e.c. reported 1 fatal injury to an employee, with a rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers at 0.39.
  • The Other manufacturing reported 1 fatal injury to an employee, with a rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers at 0.81.
  • The Manufacturing industry reported 15 fatal injuries to workers, all of whom were employees. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 0.57, and for employees, it was 0.61.
  • The Manufacture of wood and of products of wood and cork, except furniture; manufacture of articles of straw and plaiting materials reported 2 fatal injuries to workers, all of whom were employees. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 3.16, and for employees, it was 3.83.

  • The Other manufacturing reported 1 fatal injury to an employee, with a rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers at 0.81.
  • In the Professional, scientific and technical activities sector, there were 2 fatal injuries to workers, with 1 employee and 1 self-employed individual affected. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 0.07, with a higher rate among the self-employed at 0.17.
  • The Architectural and engineering activities; technical testing and analysis division reported 2 fatal injuries, with 1 employee and 1 self-employed individual affected. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers in this division was 0.30.
  • The Administrative and support service activities sector had 6 fatal injuries with a rate of 0.41 per 100,000 workers. The rate was higher among the self-employed at 1.19.
  • The Security and investigation activities division reported 1 fatal injury to an employee, with a rate of 0.53 per 100,000 employees.
  • The Services to buildings and landscape activities division had 5 fatal injuries with a rate of 0.77 per 100,000 workers. The rate was higher among the self-employed at 1.60.
  • The Public administration and defence; compulsory social security sector reported 3 fatal injuries all of which were employees, with a rate of 0.12 per 100,000 workers.
  • The Arts, entertainment and recreation sector reported 3 fatal injuries with 1 employee and 2 self-employed individuals affected. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers was 0.32, with a higher rate among the self-employed at 0.71.
  • The Sports activities and amusement and recreation activities division reported 3 fatal injuries, with 1 employee and 2 self-employed individuals affected. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers in this division was 0.59.
  • The Electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply industry had 1 fatal injury to workers with a rate of 0.57 per 100,000 workers.
  • The Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities industry reported 7 fatal injuries to workers with a rate of 2.75 per 100,000 workers. The rate was significantly higher among the self-employed in this industry at 17.57.
  • The Construction industry reported 45 fatal injuries, the highest among all industries. The rate of fatal injury per 100,000 workers in this industry was 2.10.
  • The Wholesale and retail trade; repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles industry reported 13 fatal injuries to workers with a rate of 0.36 per 100,000 workers.
  • The Transportation and storage industry reported 15 fatal injuries to workers with a rate of 0.98 per 100,000 workers.
  • The Accommodation and food service activities industry reported 2 fatal injuries to workers with a rate of 0.12 per 100,000 workers.
  • The Information and communication; financial and insurance activities; real estate activities; professional, scientific and technical activities; administrative and support service activities industry reported 8 fatal injuries to workers with a rate of 0.10 per 100,000 workers. The rate was higher among the self-employed in this industry at 0.36.
