On September 28, 2020, a tragic workplace accident occurred involving Tommy Manns, a 65-year-old employee. While driving a van out of the company’s site at Bounds Farm, the end of a security barrier speared through the vehicle’s windshield, causing his death.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) conducted an investigation and found that H Weston & Sons had installed the barrier a month earlier but failed to conduct a suitable risk assessment. Additionally, the company did not implement a safe system of work to ensure the barrier could be secured safely when open and closed. As a result, H Weston & Sons Limited was fined £1.4 million following the prosecution by the HSE.
