Maersk Line is a Danish international container shipping company and the largest operating subsidiary of Maersk, a Danish business conglomerate. Founded in 1928, it is the world’s second-largest container shipping company by both fleet size and cargo capacity, offering regular services to 374 ports in 116 countries. Maersk Line is a global leader in container shipping and logistics, providing integrated logistics solutions to simplify global trade.
Maersk Line has faced several workplace accidents and safety issues over the years. One notable incident occurred in 2024 when Maersk Line Limited agreed to alter its safety reporting policies and compensate a seaman it had terminated after they reported safety issues to the U.S. Coast Guard. This development followed a U.S. Department of Labor investigation and a three-day hearing in June 2024.
In 2020, a seaman reported safety concerns aboard the Safmarine Mafadi, including defective lifeboat equipment, crew alcohol use, inadequate supervision of cadet seamen, and a faulty bilge system. Maersk Line Limited was found to have retaliated against the seaman for reporting these concerns.
Another significant incident in 2024 involved the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) determining that Maersk Line Limited violated the federal Seaman’s Protection Act by retaliating against an employee for reporting safety concerns. The company was ordered to reinstate the employee and pay more than $700,000 in back wages and damages.
These incidents highlight the importance of safety and proper reporting mechanisms in the maritime industry.
