Michael Densmore, a 37-year-old father from Halewood in Merseyside, tragically died following a workplace accident at Tata Chemicals Europe’s Lostock Hall site in Northwich. On November 30, 2016, while erecting scaffolding, he stepped over a trough containing heated calcium hydroxide, also known as ‘milk of lime,’ which was approximately 90 degrees Celsius. His right foot slipped on an unsecured lid covering the trough, resulting in severe chemical and thermal burns to his foot and ankle123.
Despite receiving specialist treatment and undergoing surgery, Michael suffered a haemorrhage at home on January 3, 2017, and tragically died. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation found that there was no permit in place for hazardous work in a live chemical plant, and those responsible for ensuring staff safety had given little proper thought to the risks involved.
Michael was described by his family as a loving and amazing role model to his four sons and two nieces. His death has left a profound impact on his family, who have struggled to cope with the loss. Tata Chemicals Europe was fined more than £1 million for the preventable death.
