On March 3, 2021, a labourer working for Total Brickwork (UK) Ltd at a construction site in Runcorn, managed by Challenger Building Services Ltd, suffered a severe accident. The worker fell through a stairwell opening, resulting in a fractured skull, multiple broken ribs, and a broken collarbone.
The incident occurred at Okell Street, Runcorn, while the worker was clearing debris and mortar left by bricklayers. The accident happened when the worker lifted a temporary board covering the stairwell opening and stepped forward, unaware there were no floorboards underneath.
As a result of the accident, the worker sustained significant injuries, including a fractured skull, multiple broken ribs, and a broken collarbone. Following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), it was revealed that both companies failed to plan, manage, and monitor the work adequately, leading to unsafe conditions for workers accessing the first floor.
Consequently, Challenger Building Services Ltd was fined £30,000 plus £1,991.32 in costs, while Total Brickwork (UK) Ltd was fined £16,000 plus £1,991.32 in costs.
